Lots of daytime velvet in July.
The deer have gotten pretty comfortable on the St. Louis County property where these game cameras are located. We get far more deer on camera during the day than at night, and they often linger for a long time within camera view. The pair of young bucks is still hanging together, and few tall 7 pointers, and some small eights appear on camera several times a week. In addition, there are a few sets of fawns that continue to make an appearance. There are still raccoons, turkeys, squirrels, and various songbirds showing up as well.
Monitoring the game cameras has forced me to visit the property a bit more than I have during the off-season in the past. This has also given me occasion to scout out better stand locations, complete tree and trail maintenance, and get more familiar with the area in general. I must admit that I am getting excited for the September 15 archery deer opener.
Its exciting to see a larger bucks, including this one whose antlers seem to me to be disproportionally tall for how narrow the rack is and how small is body is. Will have to keep an eye on him.
On a different camera with less over all activity than this one, there is another 7 point buck that hangs out almost every day just posing for the camera. Occasionally he has friends with him but is most often solo.
There are several other bucks who were using the property in July. Again, what is interesting to me is how few night photos there are versus the large number of daytime photos.
I expect more of the same for the August images. Still looking for my first armadillo and haven’t seen a fox for months. I look forward to retrieving the images every time because you just never know what you are going to find. Check back next month, hopefully there will be a few surprises.
